Thomas Tuchel spoke to the press on Friday evening ahead of the game

England men’s senior team head coach Thomas Tuchel and defender Reece James faced the press ahead of the Three Lions’ World Cup qualifier against Andorra.

Here is what they to say.

Tuchel on how he plans to approach the game:

We anticipate a match where we are huge favourites. We accept the role and we want to live up to that role, so we anticipate a match where we have the majority of the ball. We expect a lot of ball possession, we expect to have the ball and we want to put the ball in the opponent’s half.

The focus will be on the attacking patterns, on our hunger for the reaction after ball losses for counter-pressing – these will be the main topics for tomorrow and this will then guide and demand the tactics. We want to be fully committed to a World Cup qualifier. It feels like we have to fulfil our own expectations.

On the timing of the international window:

It will be on us to get going. It is on us to keep the tempo high. It is on us to bring the energy to the pitch. It is on us to bring the attacking energy to the pitch and to do this in a relentless way.

I can fully understand that this is not the easiest time of the season for an international break – the players come from a short break of holiday and the players coming from a long and tiring season. At the same time, what I feel from the group is that they’re happy to be here.

We’re quite new together – it’s our second camp and I have trust and belief that we will do what is necessary to get the result that we want. We want a win and we want a clear and solid win that is never in danger.

On the expectation on his players during the game:

It’s also important not to over-expect from us in terms of that we expect already a clear result, the biggest chances, goals already after ten or 20 minutes and get impatient and get frustrated with ourselves. I think it’s a test to our patience. Andorra played against Spain and it was 1-0 at half time with a set piece.

On this kind of level, it’s a World Cup qualifier and you respect your opponent, you respect the quality and you respect the defensive organisation of your opponent, then you understand how difficult it is to break down.

On potential team selections:

It will be a very serious approach tomorrow. First of all, I think it’s about being serious and being professional and being determined and showing it also in the line-up.

It will be an offensive line-up and it will be an attacking line-up and it will give us the opportunity to perform and put the game where we want to have the game and get the result that we want to have and then we will see.

My thoughts are not so much ‘who can we see?’ and ‘what do we try?’ It’s more about the gameplans and who trains well and who feels well and who has the connections and who showed up in a good rhythm after a long season. From there, we take in-game decisions that are necessary according to the flow of the game and then we take the decisions in the friendly match.

James on his fitness levels:

I don’t know if I’m playing yet but for sure, I’m moving in the right direction. I finished off the season strong and I feel like I’m in a good place.

I had a difficult two or three seasons, always being injured and coming back and breaking down again. It was tough. It takes a lot out of you when you have so many setbacks. This season, I feel like I’ve come on leaps and bounds, playing on a consistent basis and getting selected for England again.

On building towards the World Cup:

We started at the last camp. Preparation for the next World Cup has started. We want to build something and build good foundations going into a huge tournament. I believe we’ve started off well and hopefully we can continue.

On the competition for places at full-back:

It’s something I’m used to, playing or competing with world-class players. Of course, it’s going to be tough but we all have different capabilities and different strengths and it’s just about whichever one the manager wants to play.

Match Stats

● Andorra have lost each of their six meetings with England by an aggregate score of 0-25, only conceding more goals against Portugal (29) and Estonia (28).

● England only have a better 100% win rate in World Cup qualifiers against Albania (7/7) and San Marino (6/6) than they do against Andorra (4/4), most recently beating the Tricolours 4-0 at home and 5-0 away from home in qualification for the 2022 World Cup.

● 173rd ranked Andorra will be the lowest ranked nation England have faced since beating San Marino (210th) 10-0 in November 2021. Since the rankings were introduced in 1993, the Three Lions have won 42 of their 43 games against nations ranked outside the top 100, with the only exception a 1-0 loss to Northern Ireland (116th) in World Cup qualification in September 2005.

● Andorra are winless in their last 14 qualification matches for major tournaments (World Cup/EUROs – D2 L12), since beating San Marino 3-0 in October 2021. In fact, their only two victories across their last 25 qualifiers have come against San Marino (also 2-0 in September 2021 – D3 L20).

● England have won each of their last five competitive matches in all competitions, last putting together a longer winning run between September 2017 and June 2018 (six in a row). Meanwhile the Three Lions could win five competitive fixtures without conceding for only the third time ever, also doing so in September 2005 and October 2007.

● Thomas Tuchel is aiming to become the fifth manager to win each of his first three competitive games in charge of England after Ron Greenwood (first 6), Glenn Hoddle, Sven-Goran Eriksson (first 5) and Fabio Capello (first 8). The German would be the first to do so without conceding, however.

● Harry Kane has scored in both of Thomas Tuchel’s first two games as England manager (vs Albania and Latvia) and the only previous player to score in each of a manager’s first three matches in charge of the Three Lions is Peter Crouch under Steve McClaren in 2006, which included a brace against Andorra.

● Since the end of the 2024 UEFA European Championship, no player has been directly involved in more England goals than Declan Rice, with his five goal involvements across his six appearances in that time (2 goals, 3 assists) more than he managed across his first 58 caps for the nation (4 – 3 goals, 1 assist).

Harry Kane and Jude Bellingham celebrate the England captain's opening goal

England continued their perfect start to their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign with a 1-0 win away to Andorra.

Harry Kane scored his 72nd goal for the Three Lions in the second half to earn all three points in Barcelona, as Thomas Tuchel’s side made it three wins from three in Group K without conceding a goal.

England started on top in Barcelona and saw the first sight of goal after five minutes following good movement from Morgan Rogers and Jude Bellingham, but Harry Kane’s shot inside the box was blocked.

Noni Madueke then called Iker Alvarez into action for the first time with an effort from the edge of the box, with the Andorran ‘keeper across his goal to palm away the strike.

The Three Lions continued to knock on the door, as Madueke flashed a ball across the face of goal before Curtis Jones and Harry Kane were unable to divert the loose ball home.

Bellingham was then next to test Alvarez, but his half-volley from outside the box was comfortably held by the Andorran stopper.

Bellingham forced another save out of Alvarez on the stroke of half time as he headed a Madueke cross goalward.

The breakthrough came five minutes after the restart, as Kane stretched to poke home at the back post from Madueke’s cross after the England captain’s initial effort was saved by Alvarez.

England then pressed for a second and came close when substitute Eberechi Eze’s header was tipped over the bar after a dinked cross from Bellingham.

Andorra briefly had a sight of goal as Guillaume Lopez broke through the lines, but his effort was smothered well by Ezri Konsa.

The Three Lions continued to push for more goals but were unable to find a way through, with Madueke unable to convert at the back post after Morgan Gibbs-White’s breakaway in stoppage time.

Tuchel’s side conclude their season with a friendly against Senegal at Nottingham Forest’s City Ground on Tuesday.
